Note: Feeder Canal Road

At one time the 40 km long feeder canal brought water from the Grand River to fill the locks of the First Welland Canal. The sleepy rural byway built in 1829 has remained mostly intact - barges filled with wheat and lumber have given way to lily pads. The shanty towns that sprang up to house the manual labourers working on digging the canal became the towns and villages that now line its route. Where there were once long-suffering canal horses, now there are only painted turtles and chirping frogs who call the canal home.

Smithville Train Station
